of our first home

Hello! Welcome to the tour of our first home! I have wanted to share all of these pictures with you for so long! When we first bought this house it was practically in original condition from how it was built in the 50’s! We did almost all of the renovating ourselves, or hired out individual professionals when necessary. In the future I would love to share detailed posts on how we did things. But for now, this is the final product. This is what our house looked like when it went on the market 3 years later. we removed a lot of the decor and made it look staged so if it looks a little sparse, that is why! When you look at these pictures, keep in mind that NOTHING looks the way it did when we purchased. If you’d like to hear more on how we did a certain room or project, drop me a comment on this post & I will get a new post together for you!

This is the front of our house, but it didn’t used to look like this! To see the original pictures and hear how we added curb appeal, check out THIS post.

We built the desk out of kitchen cabinets and plywood from Home Depot. We used Upper Kitchen Cabinets so that it would be thin. Nick built a base out of plywood and 4x4’s. Then I caulked and painted it all white.

There was a floor furnace where the entertainment center ends so we removed that and added central heat.

This fireplace used to be a foot taller with one thin board on top as the mantle. It was dark brick that had turned black from the smoke. We removed the mantle, took down a couple rows of brick and added a new mantle. I scrubbed the bricks clean, white washed them and painted the hearth white. The dutch door in the back was painted an ugly dark brown, so that got painted white as well! The wall of paneling to the right was original to the house so we patched it in and painted it fresh white.

This is the master bedroom. We didn’t do much here except fresh paint, refinished floors and new crown molding.

This is the main bathroom. It used to have a tiny vanity with hardly any storage. We took that out and had this one made from kitchen cabinets and marble. The mirror is from Home Goods and the floating shelves above the toilet are from Target.

There used to be a wall where the peninsula is with a narrow doorway into the kitchen. We took the wall down, ripped out the old cabinets, LAYERS of linoleum floors and started fresh!

The previous stove was 3 feet further into the kitchen so it was even with the doorway. Because we removed a closet that was behind it we were able to push the kitchen out and move the gas line! We had to reframe, and re-drywall a lot of this area! We also added all the pendant lights and can lights in the kitchen. Nick tiled the floors himself with help from his brothers and family, I think they did an amazing job for their first time tiling! We added base molding and freshened up the door and window trim with new paint.

Then we added all the cabinets, countertops and appliances. The backsplash is actually a peel and stick tile we got at Home Depot. We loved it because it had a stainless steel finish, it was a quarter of the price of tile and it was easy to install!

I loved this cabinet on the peninsula because the top looked pretty for display and the bottom hid all our junk! It was the perfect place to stash a coin jar, and hide clutter.

This bathroom is located right behind the kitchen and it used to be a pantry. Since we only had one bathroom we decided to convert it to a powder room. Luckily we had a raised foundation so it was easier to install all the plumbing than if we were on a slab. This room was reframed and re-drywalled because of the work we did for the kitchen right next to it. We decided to add paneling over the top to cover some of the messy drywall here! I loved the way it turned out! The vanity is from Home Depot and the mirror is actually an antique mirror that we spray painted silver.

I always wanted to install a barn door for this bathroom but we never got around to it. The exterior door here used to be dark brown, so it got a fresh coat of paint and new door hardware.

He also built the pantry in the back behind the brick chimney for storage.
