Popstar Birthday Party

My daughter loves all things performing, dancing and music so having a Popstar party was the perfect theme for her 6th birthday! I couldn’t find much inspiration for popstar parties online but did see a lot of Disco, Taylor Swift, and Rockstar themed parties that I took some inspiration from!

When I am planning a party for my kids I try to start by envisioning the overall vibe of the party. I think about the atmosphere and what kinds of activities the kids will be doing and try to plan decorations around that. The reason I do it this way is because it can be easy to brainlessly buy themed decorations for parties and then end up having no use for them and it’s just money down the drain!

One of the things I knew was going to be an absolute MUST for this party was a stage for the kids to perform on! I knew that in order for it to be a functional stage we would need a microphone, speakers and a fun backdrop!

My husband built the stage out of plywood and 2x4’s and then painted it hot pink! It turned out SO cute! For the backdrop we used the wood one my husband made and we use it for all of our kids parties! Then we covered the wood with irridiscent table cloths. You can see us putting together the backdrop as well as setting up the party in THIS video.

We bought this gold square frame for the backdrop to hang the fringe on and give it some extra dimension. I plan to use this for other parties so it was worth the small investment! We have similar ones in other shapes that we have used for other parties and I like being able to switch up the style! When I am buying things for parties I try to purchase things I think we will reuse for other parties in the future. For example the Red carpet poles we had around the page are from about 5 years ago! They were for a red carpet party I threw and we have been able to use them multiple times since then! I bought these pink velvet ropes for them for this party.

I knew we would need a functional microphone for the stage and found this really cute pink one that comes on a stand! We gifted it to my daughter for her birthday and then used it at the party! We also bought a karaoke machine that came with 2 additional microphones so 3 kids could sing at once. We also gave this as a gift to my daughter for her birthday so it helps to justify those costs and they ended up being her favorite birthday presents!

We made the pink speakers out of spray pained cardboard boxes and then just printed out the circles and glued them on! It was a really easy project and made the stage look so much more realistic!

The fringe on the backdrop is made from cut tablecloths and I showed how I made it in my video! These are the tablecloths I used to make it! Blue tablecloth, pink tablecloth and silver tablecloth I used. One thing I will warn you is that the iridescent tablecloths rip when you cut them so this was significantly harder to make than the ones I made before for my son’s party out of plastic tablecloths.

The other decoration I knew I wanted to have at this party was disco balls and balloons that looked like disco balls! We have a pergola in our backyard that I love to hand things on above our little kids tables! I bought disco balls to hang there as well as disco ball balloons and some shimmery stars. The real disco balls were definitely prettiest hanging and they selected light around which was so pretty! I plan to use these again for other parties but if you need to save money doing just the balloons is cheaper and still really cute!

We use these kids tables for all of our kids parties and it’s one of my favorite parts! I always set them up with a themed craft and I love to see all the kids sitting together working on their creation! They also will sit here for their food and for cake!

My husband built these tables out of old doors we had and just screwed 4x4’s on them as legs! When the party is over he unscrews the legs and it all stores in our garage until the next party! I cover them with sequence table cloths and you’d never know what they were built out of!

I bought these pillows off of amazon and while it is a bit of an investment, we use them for every single party! I bought these pillow cases in multiple colors and I try to plan my party themes on using similar colors So I don’t need to constantly purchase new tablecloths and pillows. You can see the last 2 girl parties we had were almost the exact same colors! You can see my daughter’s Mermaid Party and my other daughter’s Secret Garden Party through those links.

Over the years we have purchased larger items to keep on hand for parties and it has helped keep our overall cost down! Instead of renting easy ups, tables and chairs we will buy a few big things for each party and then reuse them for every party after! These white easy ups are huge for providing shade outside and we use them all the time! I love creating a simple balloon arch to decorate the front and then hanging decorations inside of them! These are my favorite balloons from amazon. These are the bar chairs we use for parties and the bar tables are just old outdoor tables we keep outside year round. Our big long table is one my husband built and we keep it outside as our outdoor dining table. The dining chairs are foldable chairs that we store in the garage and bring out when we need them so they don’t get gross sitting outside. HERE is a list with our party essentials.

For centerpieces I bought these disco ball vases and filled them with fake flowers I had on hand. I like to use fake flowers for parties because it helps with cost if you plan to reuse them! I didn’t have to buy any flowers for this party since I had everything on hand and I plan to use the vases again!

The cake was made by my husbands aunt. She always makes our party cakes for us based on inspiration pictures I send her from Pinterest! I added the disco balls to it from the ones I bought on amazon! I ended dup buying a bunch in different sizes and used them throughout the party on top of tables, the cake and cupcakes.

We went onto the stage to sing happy birthday and have her blow out her candles and it was so fun to have all her friends around watching while she was on a stage! It really made her feel like a little popstar!!

This is a closer look at what was on our kids tables! We made echo microphones for the kids to use at the party and it honestly was one of my favorite parts of the party! I always add one paper plate for each kid with all of their craft supplies on that plate. One big tip is that if you are going to set a table like this with paper plates- use glue dots or tape to attach the plates to the table. This keeps the plates from blowing away! I made a blog post with more detail about this activity/party favor and I have a video on it here. HERE are all the links to make them.

We didn’t do a ton of food because I hired a taco guy to serve dinner. I typically do evening parties because it helps us beat the heat and gives me more time to set up. I like using a taco guy because the food is served hot and I don’t have to worry about food prep! We did set up this little dessert table for kids to help themselves to through the party.

You can see the other centerpieces I used are these pink boxes filled with flowers. I made these for my daughters party 2 years ago and use them for a lot of our parties! I just leave the flowers in them and store them in a storage tub.

I made these personalized lemonade pouches for the kids to drink out of and I have a video on how I made them here. Here are all of the links to make them!

I designed this sign on Canvas and had it printed at staples as a poster. We had a big storage shed in our yard for this party because we are remodeling our garage and in order to cover the eyesore we taped these iridescent tablecloths to it and then added this sign and some balloons!

I also designed these pictures and posters on canva. I printed the one in the frame for decor and also made some for the bar! The big poster I printed at staples and then glued on to a foam board so we could display it on an easel.

These are the party favors we gave! I found these cute speaker boxes and filled them with stickers, hair bows, bracelets and some other fun goodies! They had sunglesses in them as well but I last minute pulled those out and added them to the kids table so the kids could wear them at the party instead of having to wait till they left. These are the cute heart shaped ones I got for the girls and these are the ones I got for the boys.

I use this white vanity a lot for my daughter’s parties. It is in her room on daily basis but the little girls love going up to it at a party and getting a little dolled up! I bought colored hair pieces and braids for their hair as well as face jewels and temporary tattoos that we left here for them to self serve.

My mother-in-law set up this really cute DIY Bracelet table and the kids had so much fun making their own bracelets!

We also had a bounce house that I don’t have a picture of! I can never justify the cost of the aesthetic white or pink bounce houses so I typically just get the cheaper pink and purple castle from a local bounce house guy and it saves hundreds/thousands of dollars!

I had so much fun planning our outfits for this party! My daughter’s dress is actually the exact same one she wore to her 4th birthday party 2 years ago! My husband’s aunt made it for her and it still fits! I bought a bunch of dresses on amazon for her but none of them were as cute as this one. I also made her vest for her! I bought a white jean jacket and cut the sleeves and bottom of it off to make it a cropped vest. Then I bought a bunch of cute patches on amazon and ironed them on!

I linked most of our outfit details HERE for you.

I made both my husband and son’s shirts using iron on printer paper and my Cricut ! It’s honestly so easy to do! I never got a chance to add the words onto my son’s shirt but my husband’s shirt said “JuJu B Fan Club”. For the picture of her my sister actually made one of those cartoon pictures! You can buy one off etsy for pretty cheap too! I then printed that picture onto the iron on fabric using my color printer. Then I cut out the picture and ironed it onto their shirts using my heat press but you can also use a normal iron! For the gold sparkly words on my husbands shirt I used my Cricut to cut out the words onto iron on vinyl and then ironed them on to his shirt! Let me know if you want me to make a tutorial on how I do this!

Another fun detail of our outfits was that my daughter and I had colored hair clips on! I also added pink tinsel to her hair so it was sparkly!

I hope you enjoyed seeing my daughter’s party! It turned out so cute and was such a blast for all of us! My daughter and all her friends felt like real posters. They had so much fun performing on the stage and running around playing together.

These parties are always a ton of work and while I try my best to DIY and cut costs there are a ton of money too! Sometimes I wonder if they are really worth it all but then when I look around the day of and see how much fun all the kids are having and I hear my kids talk about their parties months later, I really do feel it’s worth it!

I hope you watch my videos on the party too because you can see some of it in more detail!
